After his graduation of Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo in 1984, Junya Watanabe joined COMME des GARÇONS as a patternmaker. During this period he became on of Rei Kawakubo her protégés, and in 1992 he got rewarded with his own womensline, designing under his own name but as part of COMME des GARÇONS. He debuted his men’s collection a decade later, Spring / Summer 2002. His man’s collections are known for taking a classic image or motif and chuck it into an avant-garde blender, resembling the pieces into something familiair but unmistakably altered.
